The MRAA 2026 Exhibition of Small Works opening January 9, 2026

Lower temperatures can mean a chill, but art steps in to keep our spirits high. The *Warming to Winter* show displays small works with big creativity, proving that even in the coldest months, beauty can still make our days hearty and snug.Artists of the MRAA present an exhibition of small works at the Cedarfield Gallery, 2300 Cedarfield Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23233. All works are 1 x 14 inches, or smaller and represent a variety of media. The show opens January 9, 2026, and closes March 15, 2026. Hours are available through the Cedarfield Gallery.

History Hounds Walking Tours are made possible through the partnership between the Valentine and the Richmond SPCA. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccines, mix well with others (both human and canine) and remain on a leash. We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

The War in Pieces new play festival is an annual event sponsored by the Virginia War Memorial Foundation as an extension of the Mighty Pen Project. The MPP is a multi-faceted writing program for military veterans and their spouses, to help them learn how to express their own powerful stories through the medium of the written word. In the War in Pieces program, Veterans pen four new short plays which are professionally developed, rehearsed, and publicly performed. Firehouse Theatre once again serves as the producing partner, bringing these vital stories to life onstage.

Originally founded in 1989 by Michelle & Nick Nixon, the current line-up features the Nixons supported by Randy Cook (pedal steel), Morgan Easter (keys), Steve Easter (bass), Eddie Shiflett (guitar/mando), and Craig Lokey (drums). Slate River Band returns to CenterField with covers of classic country music hits from the 60’s to today – with an emphasis on the 90’s. This eagerly awaited play is directed by Bhattacharya himself, portraying the effects of climate change on animal-human interaction. It talks about the eternal parental love for their offspring, predator-prey relationships, and questions who the real predators are. It asks about the responsibility humans bear, not only to themselves but also to Mother Earth and its inhabitants. An injured thief runs into a wounded Bengal tiger under the shadow of a prominent politician's house, where the hunters are celebrating a successful hunt. The play portrays how the construction of a dam near a village destroys the forest and farmland, and disrupts the lives, hopes, and dreams of a farmer who turns to stealing, and a tigress who must take care of her cubs in whatever way she can. Their chance encounter brings hidden questions to the surface as both the creatures, apparently on the verge of death, both trying to fend for their children, confront what life has in store for them. Both make ultimate sacrifices, and in the process, one learns what it truly means to be a real human.

“This is a story of our times. Our world is changing, forests are disappearing, animal habitats are shrinking, and instead of hiding our collective heads in the sand, “Empty Night” decides to confront the problem — that too, from the perspective of an animal whose mesmerizing beauty is often overshadowed by its ferocity," says playwright and director Abhisek Bhattacharya. A short version of “Empty Night” thrilled audiences in Kansas City and Maryland, where each performance was met with warm, enthusiastic applause and thoughtful audience interaction. After Richmond, “Empty Night” will be performed across the USA in multiple festivals.

Founded in 2019, Hattimatim-Team is a bilingual community theatre company based in Maryland, USA. For the last couple of years, they have performed all over the USA, from LA to off-off-Broadway play festivals in NYC, presenting Abhisek’s original plays. "Empty Night" is going to be their maiden production in Richmond.

The exhibition features historic photographs of Broad Street taken in 1919 by G.L. Hall, a local photographer who operated a modest studio on the street. It highlights Broad Street’s history and buildings through photographs, architectural drawings, advertisements and other historical documents from the Library’s collections. Hall’s panoramic scenes offer an authentic, ground-level perspective of an area he knew well, capturing the details and character of one of Richmond’s most iconic streets.

The exhibit offers a glimpse of a city in motion. The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation. Emerging from the shadows of World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the city was experiencing social shifts, economic development and an evolving urban landscape. Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era.

"Her Prospects of Election: Virginia Women in Politics" is a lobby display commemorating the inauguration of Virginia's first woman governor in 2026. Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

In December 2021, a copper box filled with artifacts that had been buried for 134 years beneath the statue of Robert E. Lee on Richmond’s Monument Avenue was opened with great ceremony. Newspaper articles from 1887 had dubbed these mementos of Lee and life in the capital during and after the Civil War “cornerstone contributions.” In “The Buried Cause,” historians, curators, preservationists and other experts from across the Commonwealth come together to analyze these individual contributions, which include Masonic and military calling cards, copper coins gathered by the young sons of a Confederate veteran, a photograph of a memorial window in the Confederate Memorial Chapel, Southern bonds and currency, muster rolls, medals, reunion programs and more. The book’s essays reveal to readers the lives of the people who donated the objects, the ceremonies that enshrined them, and the communities disregarded and unaccounted for in this material snapshot of the past.

Ridgeway is the state archaeological conservator for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. She works with professionals and the public around the Commonwealth to promote the preservation of the state’s rich cultural heritage and led the team that opened the containers found under the Robert E. Lee Monument on Monument Avenue.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home, which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale, Cambridge, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His newest book is The American Revolution and the Fate of the World.

About the Book:

A gripping chronicle of the rise and fall of a woman-led cult—and the enduring allure of extremism across America’s turbulent religious history.

On a cool fall night in 1999, twenty-six-year-old Sarah Green crept out of her house, retrieved a backpack from its hiding place, and ran for her life. She was escaping not just the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps, a paramilitary religious cult operating out of the New Mexico desert, but also the punishments and cruelty of the cult’s leader—her mother, Deborah.

In The Oracle’s Daughter, Harrison Hill traces the fascinating beginnings and violent end of ACMTC, from its early days as an outgrowth of the 1960s counterculture to its descent into conspiracy-fueled abuse. This is the story of three women—Deborah, the group’s founder and self-proclaimed oracle; Maura, one of its first members; and Sarah, Deborah’s daughter—bound together by a punitive, baroque set of radical beliefs and practices, including exorcism, kidnapping, and the horrific mistreatment of those who fell out of the leaders’ favor.

As dramatic as it is deeply researched, The Oracle's Daughter traces the long, strange history of America's religious life, illuminating the porous boundary between the fringe and the mainstream—and showing how much more vulnerable we are to extremism than we might like to think.

About the Author:

Harrison Hill grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia and lives in Brooklyn, New York. He received his MFA in nonfiction from Columbia University, where he also taught undergraduate writing. His journalism and essays have appeared in The Cut, GQ, Vogue, Travel + Leisure, AFAR, The Guardian, and The Threepenny Review. The Oracle’s Daughter is his first book.

Highly regarded as a musician’s musician, Steve Wilson has brought his distinctive sound to more than 100 recordings and ensembles led by such celebrated artists as Chick Corea, Ron Carter, Christian McBride, George Duke, Michael Brecker, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson, Maria Schneider, Joe Henderson, and many others. Starting his formal training on saxophone in his native Hampton, Virginia, Wilson majored in music at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he performed and/or studied with Jimmy and Percy Heath, Jon Hendricks, Jaki Byard, John Hicks, Frank Foster and Ellis Marsalis.

Billy Childs has emerged as one of the foremost American composers of his era, perhaps the most distinctly American composer since Aaron Copland – for like Copland, he has successfully married the musical products of his heritage with the Western neoclassical traditions of the twentieth century in a powerful symbiosis of style, range, and dynamism. His works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Disney Concert Hall. He has also garnered seventeen GRAMMY nominations and six awards: two for Best Instrumental Composition (Into the Light from Lyric and The Path Among The Trees from Autumn: In Moving Pictures), two for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist (including New York Tendaberry from Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro, featuring Renee Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma), and two for Best Instrumental Jazz Album: Rebirth (2018) and The Winds of Change (2024)

The War in Pieces new play festival is an annual event sponsored by the Virginia War Memorial Foundation as an extension of the Mighty Pen Project. The MPP is a multi-faceted writing program for military veterans and their spouses, to help them learn how to express their own powerful stories through the medium of the written word. In the War in Pieces program, Veterans pen four new short plays which are professionally developed, rehearsed, and publicly performed. Firehouse Theatre once again serves as the producing partner, bringing these vital stories to life onstage.

The exhibition features historic photographs of Broad Street taken in 1919 by G.L. Hall, a local photographer who operated a modest studio on the street. It highlights Broad Street’s history and buildings through photographs, architectural drawings, advertisements and other historical documents from the Library’s collections. Hall’s panoramic scenes offer an authentic, ground-level perspective of an area he knew well, capturing the details and character of one of Richmond’s most iconic streets.

The exhibit offers a glimpse of a city in motion. The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation. Emerging from the shadows of World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the city was experiencing social shifts, economic development and an evolving urban landscape. Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era.

"Her Prospects of Election: Virginia Women in Politics" is a lobby display commemorating the inauguration of Virginia's first woman governor in 2026. Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Genealogy is everywhere today; online, on our screens, and through organizations, conferences, and communities across the country. But long before the digital age, genealogy was just as powerful in the 18th century. While we often think of early Americans as the subjects of genealogical research, they were active participants in a practice that shaped their world. Family histories were deeply meaningful and were woven into the very fabric of society through law, politics, and religion.

Drawing on extensive research across 18th century British America, Karin Wulf’s new book, Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America, explores how genealogy functioned in the past and why it continues to matter today.

Karin Wulf is Director and Librarian of the John Carter Brown Library and Professor of History at Brown University. A historian of early America specializing in gender, family, and politics, she writes for both public and academic audiences about history, research and scholarship, and the vital role of libraries and archives. She serves on numerous nonprofit boards, is involved in national planning for the 2026 semiquincentennial, and is a Vice President of the American Historical Association.

About Becoming Citizens:

In this multi–session course, museum staff will prepare students to successfully complete the U.S. citizenship test. Like other citizenship courses, students will learn the civics and history lessons necessary to pass the citizenship examination.

Unlike other citizenship classes, this course, held at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, offers students opportunities to personally interact with original historical objects, maps, books, and documents and engage with experts in the history of this state and nation. This course offers expert instruction as well as a unique experience as you prepare yourself for the citizenship test.

Pre-registration is recommended, but students can register at the fair or at the door on the evening of the first class on April 9.
Students in this course must have permanent resident status and have already submitted or are preparing to submit their N-400 application to become a naturalized citizen.
This series of 5 classes will be held consecutive Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:00 pm beginning April 9 and ending May 7.

The classes are 100% free, so students will not be penalized if they cannot attend every session or need to leave early. However, attendance in all classes is required to obtain all the curriculum information.

The exhibit offers a glimpse of a city in motion. The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation. Emerging from the shadows of World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the city was experiencing social shifts, economic development and an evolving urban landscape. Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era.

"Her Prospects of Election: Virginia Women in Politics" is a lobby display commemorating the inauguration of Virginia's first woman governor in 2026. Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

Kick-Off The Skipwith-Roper Homecoming Weekend with The JXN Project

Currently, Dr. Moon is the Chief Impact Officer for Girl Scouts of the USA. Prior to GSUSA, she was appointed as Chief Diversity Officer of the U.S. House of Representatives for the 117th & 118th Congresses by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She also served in the Office of the Secretary and U.S. Patent & Trademark Office at the U.S. Department of Commerce — concluding her tenure as inaugural Chief Diversity Officer at the National Institute of Standards & Technology. Upon departing the Federal Government, Dr. Moon served as Chief Brand Strategist for the National Campaign Co-Chair, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, for Harris for President and Executive-in-Residence with Leader Stacey Abrams' American Pride Rises through her non-partisan consultancy — Moon & Associates, LLC.

In addition to executive leadership programs at Harvard University, where she received the DEI Pioneer Award, Dr. Moon earned a Ph.D. in Public Administration & Policy from Old Dominion University, as well as a B.A. and M.S. from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs from Virginia Commonwealth University — where she became the first Black queer woman to establishment an endowment in university history. Her and her family also maintain endowments at Virginia Union University, Virginia State University, and Richmond Public Schools.

Dr. Moon is also Co-Founder of The JXN Project, which has been documented by 2021 Pulitzer Prize Winning Richmond Times-Dispatch and is a grantee of the Mellon Foundation, Dominion Energy Foundation, Airbnb, and Nike's Jordan Brand. The project has received the American Association for State and Local History's 2022 Leadership in History Award, as well as the 2025 Changemaker Award by Initiatives of Change United States, 2022 RVA Community Maker Award by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 2022 Richmond History Maker Award by the Valentine Museum, and 2021 Golden Hammer Award for "Best Placemaking" by Historic Richmond. The project recently opened an exhibition at the Library of Virginia titled "House to Highway: Reclaiming a Community History" as part of "The Skipwith-Roper Homecoming" for America 250 and is developing a film in partnership with PBS NPR VPM titled "Declarations of Independence."

Dr. Moon, who has appeared in Forbes, ESSENCE, and CNN, was recognized at the United Nations as “100 of the Most Influential People of African Descent" in 2023 and was named "2023 Top 40 Under 40" by PBS NPR VPM’s Style Weekly — and Axios named her and her sister as the second "Most Powerful Richmonders of 2022." She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and has served on the Board of Directors with the African American Federal Executive Association and Commonwealth of Virginia's Criminal Justice Services Board as appointed by the 73rd Governor of Virginia.

Dr. Moon resides between Washington, DC and New York, NY but hails from Richmond, Virginia as the proud daughter of Dr. Michon Moon and the late August Moon.

About the Artist:
A popular comedian turned actor who started his career on-stage as a dare, funnyman Eddie Griffin has built an ever-growing fan base since jumping onto the comedy scene in 1990.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Eddie was voted class clown three years in a row in high school. His first love was always dance and by the young age of 16, he opened his own dance studio and was choreographing the Kansas City Chiefs half-time shows. But all of that would soon change when one night his cousin dared him to go on stage at the local comedy club Sanford and Sons where he was told to do 3 minutes. He performed off-the-cuff for 45 minutes successfully. It was then that Griffin purchased a one-way ticket to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a stand up.
He played The Pastor opposite Dave Chappelle, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in 2018’s Academy Award Winning feature film A Star is Born.
His Showtime Comedy Special Eddie Griffin: Undeniable debuted on Showtime in February 2018 to rave reviews.
Currently, Eddie can be found performing his Las Vegas Residency, The Eddie Griffin Experience, Monday through Wednesday night, 8PM at the Sayers Club in the Sahara Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. His most recent comedy special Undeniable premiered on Showtime in 2017 to rave reviews.

The War in Pieces new play festival is an annual event sponsored by the Virginia War Memorial Foundation as an extension of the Mighty Pen Project. The MPP is a multi-faceted writing program for military veterans and their spouses, to help them learn how to express their own powerful stories through the medium of the written word. In the War in Pieces program, Veterans pen four new short plays which are professionally developed, rehearsed, and publicly performed. Synopsis: On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn't heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won't protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts. In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back. Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values.

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange.

Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

About the Artist:
A popular comedian turned actor who started his career on-stage as a dare, funnyman Eddie Griffin has built an ever-growing fan base since jumping onto the comedy scene in 1990.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Eddie was voted class clown three years in a row in high school. His first love was always dance and by the young age of 16, he opened his own dance studio and was choreographing the Kansas City Chiefs half-time shows. But all of that would soon change when one night his cousin dared him to go on stage at the local comedy club Sanford and Sons where he was told to do 3 minutes. He performed off-the-cuff for 45 minutes successfully. It was then that Griffin purchased a one-way ticket to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a stand up.
He played The Pastor opposite Dave Chappelle, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in 2018’s Academy Award Winning feature film A Star is Born.
His Showtime Comedy Special Eddie Griffin: Undeniable debuted on Showtime in February 2018 to rave reviews.

Their show is an intimate exploration of acoustic music rooted in the sounds of Appalachia and seasoned by travels around the globe. Following international tours in Japan, Europe, and across the US over the past year, and Anya’s performance at the Richmond Folk Festival last fall, the duo will bring their surprisingly dynamic range of styles back home in 2026.

Both artists have been awarded prestigious grants for their work: Hinkle was the recipient of the USArtist International grant from the National Endowment for the Arts with her worldgrass trio TANASI in 2025, and Weitnauer was awarded the 2021 Tennessee Arts Commission Grant for her solo project, Sixteen Kings Daughters. About the Artists
The Blue Ridge Girls, comprised of Jamie Collins, Martha Spencer, and Brett Morris, is a trio firmly rooted in Appalachian folk music with deep roots in Appalachian music that they are bringing into the 21st century kicking and clogging.

Showcasing skillful musicianship and honey-sweet vocal harmonies, they perform a mix of traditional standards and Blue-Ridge-breathed originals.

Each of these artists has musical roots that run deep, with family backgrounds that connect them to the music of their homeland. Moreover, they have shown a deep commitment to preserving and passing on traditional music ways as music educators and through their involvement with organizations like Junior Appalachian Musicians.

Also talented songwriters, their original ballads like “Home is Where The Fiddle Rings” and “Piney” feature dreamy vocals, drawing from personal experience to beautifully capture the feeling of growing up in rural Appalachia. Meanwhile up-tempo tunes such as “Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow” and “We Can’t Get to Memphis” feature the kind of hard-driving banjo licks and flatfoot dancing that audiences can’t get enough of.

Junior Sisk is widely regarded as one of today’s leading voices in traditional bluegrass music. A native of the Virginia Blue Ridge, Sisk grew up in a musical family and was influenced early on by bluegrass legends like The Stanley Brothers, Larry Sparks, and the Johnson Mountain Boys. He began playing guitar at age 14 and first made his mark as a songwriter in the early 1990s, penning classics for the Lonesome River Band.

Over the years, Sisk has performed with Wyatt Rice & Santa Cruz and Blueridge, helping to shape the modern traditional bluegrass sound. In 1998, he formed Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, releasing Sounds of the Mountains and later rising to national prominence with Heart of a Song, which won the 2012 IBMA Album of the Year. The album’s standout single, “A Far Cry from Lester and Earl,” also earned IBMA Song of the Year honors.

Sisk has since received numerous accolades, including IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year and SPBGMA Album and Song of the Year awards. Now recording with Mountain Fever Records, his 2020 release Load the Wagon became his most successful to date. With new music on the way, Junior Sisk remains a powerful force in bluegrass.

Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

During 2026, Richmond Public Library will be hosting programs as part of Between Two Worlds: Exploring Jewish Culture and Religion Through Yiddish Literature, a partnership with the Yiddish Book Center.

Introduction to Yiddish Language will introduce the Yiddish alphabet (alef-beys), historical information about the formation of Yiddish, and practice of basic vocabulary. We will use written and audio-visual materials, as well as giving participants resources to take home or follow up with on their own.

Please note that participation in any Between Two Worlds programs is open to all. People wishing to learn more about Yiddish literature and culture are encouraged to register, regardless of your level of previous knowledge. Through reading high quality translations and participating in facilitated discussions, these stories and histories will be made available to as many people as possible. Participation in other Between Two Worlds programs encouraged but not required.

The Yiddish Book Center’s Public Libraries Program brings Yiddish literature in translation to libraries nationwide, encouraging connections and sparking cross-cultural dialogue. The exhibition features historic photographs of Broad Street taken in 1919 by G.L. Hall, a local photographer who operated a modest studio on the street. It highlights Broad Street’s history and buildings through photographs, architectural drawings, advertisements and other historical documents from the Library’s collections. Hall’s panoramic scenes offer an authentic, ground-level perspective of an area he knew well, capturing the details and character of one of Richmond’s most iconic streets.

The exhibit offers a glimpse of a city in motion. The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation. Emerging from the shadows of World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the city was experiencing social shifts, economic development and an evolving urban landscape. Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era.

"Her Prospects of Election: Virginia Women in Politics" is a lobby display commemorating the inauguration of Virginia's first woman governor in 2026. Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

The exhibition features historic photographs of Broad Street taken in 1919 by G.L. Hall, a local photographer who operated a modest studio on the street. It highlights Broad Street’s history and buildings through photographs, architectural drawings, advertisements and other historical documents from the Library’s collections. Hall’s panoramic scenes offer an authentic, ground-level perspective of an area he knew well, capturing the details and character of one of Richmond’s most iconic streets.

The exhibit offers a glimpse of a city in motion. The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation. Emerging from the shadows of World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the city was experiencing social shifts, economic development and an evolving urban landscape. Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era.

Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

Dr. Brian Daugherity is a professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University. His research focuses on the implementation of the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision in Virginia. Dr. Daugherity has published and edited many works including With All Deliberate Speed: Implementing Brown v. Board of Education (2008), Keep On Keeping On: The NAACP and the Implementation of Brown v. Board of Education in Virginia (2016), and A Little Child Shall Lead Them: A Documentary Account of the Struggle for School Desegregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia (2019). He is currently co-producing a 60- minute documentary film on the historic Green v. New Kent County (1968) U.S. Supreme Court decision.

Following the lecture, guests are encouraged to view the maquette of the Barbara Rose Johns statue that represents Virginia in the United States Capitol’s Statuary Hall. Unveiled on December 16, 2025, Barbara Johns’s statue stands alongside George Washington as the two representatives from Virginia. Presented in partnership with Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources, the maquette from artist Steven Weitzman is currently on display at the VMHC and is the only surviving version of the artwork except for the final, full-size statue itself.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Richmond, Virginia was poised for transformation. Electric streetcars hummed across new bridges, farmland gave way to tree-lined boulevards, and a visionary generation of builders, ministers, and merchants created a community that would define the city’s northern horizon. A History of Brookland Park: The People and the Places tells that story — the rise of one of Richmond’s earliest and most distinctive streetcar suburbs, where architecture, faith, and civic pride shaped a neighborhood that endures to this day.

Dr. Nicolay is a retired educator and Assistant Superintendent for Technology with Culpeper County Schools. He earned his MA in history from VPI and his PHD in public policy and planning from VPI. He taught for 30 years, most of them with the University of Maryland where he held the rank of Professor. He is the managing editor of the Virginia Writers Project's triannual journal.

About the Event:

The evening kicks off with a relaxed reception featuring light bites from local Richmond restaurants along with wine and beer.
From there, community partners will guide you through beloved games from around the world, including daruma otoshi, pachisi, and lotería, sharing the stories and traditions behind each one. After learning the ropes, you’ll have time to mingle and test your skills.
Local artist, Ruchi Gupta, will present the game of pachisi, explaining some of its ancient roots and members from the Latine Student Association at VCU will introduce lotería!

About Becoming Citizens:

In this multi–session course, museum staff will prepare students to successfully complete the U.S. citizenship test. Like other citizenship courses, students will learn the civics and history lessons necessary to pass the citizenship examination.

Unlike other citizenship classes, this course, held at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, offers students opportunities to personally interact with original historical objects, maps, books, and documents and engage with experts in the history of this state and nation. This course offers expert instruction as well as a unique experience as you prepare yourself for the citizenship test.

Pre-registration is recommended, but students can register at the fair or at the door on the evening of the first class on April 9.
Students in this course must have permanent resident status and have already submitted or are preparing to submit their N-400 application to become a naturalized citizen.
This series of 5 classes will be held consecutive Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:00 pm beginning April 9 and ending May 7.

The classes are 100% free, so students will not be penalized if they cannot attend every session or need to leave early. However, attendance in all classes is required to obtain all the curriculum information.

What’s the difference between a charity and a private foundation? 501c3 and a 501c4? How do you establish a nonprofit? This workshop will review introductory governance, legal status, and reporting compliance for nonprofits in Virginia. Get answers to questions related to the IRS 1023 form, as well as state and local filing requirements. The Law Librarian will also show participants how to access and use nonprofit governance, planning, and fundraising tools available at the Richmond Public Library - including Guidestar and the Foundation Center grant database.

Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land invites audiences into the wide-open spaces of the American heart. Set on a family farm in the 1930s, this quietly powerful mid-century opera speaks across generations, exploring timeless questions of hope, belonging, and the choices that shape our lives. Copland’s unmistakable “American sound”—spare, lyrical, and deeply expressive—underscores a story that is at once intimate and universal. Though rooted in one family’s experience, The Tender Land reflects struggles and dreams we all recognize, making it a work that feels both distinctly human and distinctly American.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

About the Artist:
Comedian Steve Treviño is “America’s Favorite Husband.” He can “speak wife fluently,” he never calls “the guys” for help on a home project, and he knows better than to “make his own decisions,” since decision-making is a privilege reserved solely for his wife, Renae.
His relatable approach affirms his status as one of the country’s fastest-rising comics, viewed over 223 million times, selling out shows coast-to-coast, amassing over 2 million total social media followers, and headlining specials for Amazon, NETFLIX, Showtime, and more.
He started cutting his teeth in Dallas, Texas, working as a door guy at the Improv and earning himself a spot to open the iconic 2001 Three Amigos Comedy Tour. He quickly earned his stripes and an audience on the comedy club circuit, and he began headlining on his own by the age of 25. He delivered side-splitting performances on The Late Late Show and Comics Unleashed, and produced and wrote for international GRAMMY® Award-winning superstar Pitbull’s La Esquina.
His first Showtime special, Grandpa Joe’s Son, staked out a spot in the Nielsen Top 20. He funded, produced, and shot his 2014 runaway NETFLIX hit Relatable. The exhibition features historic photographs of Broad Street taken in 1919 by G.L. Hall, a local photographer who operated a modest studio on the street. It highlights Broad Street’s history and buildings through photographs, architectural drawings, advertisements and other historical documents from the Library’s collections. Hall’s panoramic scenes offer an authentic, ground-level perspective of an area he knew well, capturing the details and character of one of Richmond’s most iconic streets.

The exhibit offers a glimpse of a city in motion. The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation. Emerging from the shadows of World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the city was experiencing social shifts, economic development and an evolving urban landscape. Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era.

"Her Prospects of Election: Virginia Women in Politics" is a lobby display commemorating the inauguration of Virginia's first woman governor in 2026. Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

Baby Artsplay!™ classes demonstrate the important connection between performing arts and early childhood development. Once registered, parents/caregivers attend all sessions with their children and learn strategies for incorporating singing, dancing, drama, and other multi-sensory activities into their child’s daily routine to increase engagement and support learning. Marlee Hightower was born in Bakersfield, CA on December 2nd, 1999. 1 year later, Marlee and her parents married and moved to Indianapolis, IN to be close to her mother’s side of the family. This is where her dance journey would begin.
Even as a baby, you could find Marlee dancing. So, at the age of 3, Marlee’s mother decided to enroll her in a combination ballet/jazz/tumbling class. While the other kids seemed to be there for play, Marlee took it all very seriously.

In 2004, at the age of 4, Marlee and her family relocated to Orlando, FL. It was here she would discover hip hop dance and eventually make her way on to a dance team called, “Studio One”.

In 2010, the team’s coach, Julie Johnson, took the top 8 dancers from Studio One, ranging in age from 10-21, (4 boys and 4 girls, including Marlee) and formed “Studio One, Young Beast Society”. They went on to make America’s Got Talent history, as the first dance group ever to reach the top 48 — and eventually the top 5. It was the show’s highest rated season, to date.

After the subsequent AGT Live tour, Marlee decided to try her hand at choreography. With the help of her parents, she made her first YouTube dance video -- a freestyle to Jesse J’s “Do It Like A Dude”. After the video received over 1 million views, promoters and studio owners began to take notice, requesting she come and teach class.

At age 11, Marlee began making solo appearances, as a headliner on the World of Dance tour, as well as teaching dance workshops across the country.

In 2013, World of Dance nominated Marlee for, "Teen Choreographer of the Year", alongside Chachi Gonzales (IaMmE, ABDC 6) and powerhouse Kaelynn "Kay Kay" Gobert-Harris (8 Flavahz, ABDC 7, Usher).

2013 also marked the year Marlee signed with Bloc, a prestigious dance/talent agency in Los Angeles. Marlee has been blessed to work on several national commercials and videos for companies such as Samsung, Mattel, TJ Maxx, Party City, Motorola, and Puma. Another highlight was landing a cameo in Pharrel William’s star-studded “Happy” video, and even dancing with Janet Jackson on select stops of her “Unbreakable” Tour.

In 2015, Marlee’s family opened Orlando’s first open-class hip hop/choreography studio, called Motiv Dance. In 2016, Marlee started a dance team of her own called, Motiv Crew; which she now co-directs with fellow dancer/choreographer, Dario Boatner. In 2018, Marlee and Motiv Crew appeared on NBC’s World Of Dance, Season 3. In 2020, Marlee became co-owner and artistic director of Motiv Dance Studio.

Marlee’s passion for art is not exclusive to dance. From an early age, Marlee was driven and inspired by the human experience and ways in which dance, art, and even film were used to express one’s inner world.

In 2019, Marlee began to create visual art as a form of therapy. She believed that this additional expression would help make sense of all that lived within her. That notion is still the driving force for her work today, both as a dancer and an artist. Marlee has immersed herself fully into creating art and dance art pieces that are rooted in emotional honesty. She hopes to be an example and an inspiration for others to be able to express their truest self.

The exhibition features historic photographs of Broad Street taken in 1919 by G.L. Hall, a local photographer who operated a modest studio on the street. It highlights Broad Street’s history and buildings through photographs, architectural drawings, advertisements and other historical documents from the Library’s collections. Hall’s panoramic scenes offer an authentic, ground-level perspective of an area he knew well, capturing the details and character of one of Richmond’s most iconic streets.

The exhibit offers a glimpse of a city in motion. The year 1919 marked a period of transition and growth for Richmond and the nation. Emerging from the shadows of World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the city was experiencing social shifts, economic development and an evolving urban landscape. Broad Street served as a busy corridor of commerce and culture, its architecture reflecting both the ambitions and challenges of the era.

"Her Prospects of Election: Virginia Women in Politics" is a lobby display commemorating the inauguration of Virginia's first woman governor in 2026. Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

About the Book:

When the founding fathers of the United States inaugurated a system of government that was unprecedented in the modern world, they knew that a functioning democracy required an educated electorate capable of making rational decisions. But who would validate the information that influenced citizens’ opinions? By spotlighting various institutions of learning, Oberle provides a comprehensive look at how knowledge was created, circulated and consumed in the early American republic.

Many of the founders, including George Washington, initially favored the creation of a centralized national university to educate Americans from all backgrounds. Over the first half of the 19th century, however, politicians moved away from any notion of publicly educated laypeople generating useful knowledge. The federal government ultimately founded the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., to be run by experts only. Oberle’s insightful analysis of the competing ideas over the nature of education offers food for thought as we continue to grapple with a rapidly evolving media landscape amid contested meanings of knowledge, expertise and the obligations of citizenship.

Oberle is the history librarian, an associate (term) professor and the director of the Center for Mason Legacies at George Mason University.

A book signing will follow the program. This event is part of the Library’s programming commemorating Virginia's role in the 250th anniversary of American independence.

About the Author:

Steve Parke is an award-winning illustrator, designer, and photographer. He worked for Prince for 13 years as his in-house art director at Paisley Park. He’s also worked with many other artists, both as a photographer and a designer of numerous album covers and promotional materials and merchandise. He is currently a photographer and photo editor for Enchanted Living Magazine and is working on a book photo project for Simon & Schuster written by Alice Hoffman.

Prince discovered Paul Peterson, aka “St Paul,” at the age of 17, enlisting him as a keyboard player in “The Time” for the movie “Purple Rain.” Paul took the lead vocalist spot in the Prince-produced group “The Family” before becoming a solo artist.

He currently tours with his band, "St Paul and the Minneapolis Funk All Stars," consisting of musicians and producers who helped to create the Minneapolis Sound.

About Becoming Citizens:

In this multi–session course, museum staff will prepare students to successfully complete the U.S. citizenship test. Like other citizenship courses, students will learn the civics and history lessons necessary to pass the citizenship examination.

Unlike other citizenship classes, this course, held at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, offers students opportunities to personally interact with original historical objects, maps, books, and documents and engage with experts in the history of this state and nation. This course offers expert instruction as well as a unique experience as you prepare yourself for the citizenship test.

Pre-registration is recommended, but students can register at the fair or at the door on the evening of the first class on April 9.
Students in this course must have permanent resident status and have already submitted or are preparing to submit their N-400 application to become a naturalized citizen.
This series of 5 classes will be held consecutive Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:00 pm beginning April 9 and ending May 7.

The classes are 100% free, so students will not be penalized if they cannot attend every session or need to leave early. However, attendance in all classes is required to obtain all the curriculum information.

About the Artist:
A versatile actor, writer, host, and standup comic, Godfrey has made a name for himself for the range and depth in his work. With an ongoing successful career in standup comedy, he tours internationally and his hilarious one hour stand-up special, REGULAR BLACK, is currently available on Showtime.
On the acting front, Godfrey played the hilarious recurring role of ‘Plaid Jeff’ in Adult Swim’s NEON JOE, WEREWOLF HUNTER. He has also held great recurring roles in LOUIE for FX, BENDERS for IFC and played the lead in the FX pilot, BRONX WARRANTS. His Feature credits include ZOOLANDER, SOUL PLANE, and the Indie, LEAVING LAS VEGAS, in which he performed alongside Nicolas Cage. Godfrey has also used his creative depth in the development of an animated pilot for FOX, that was based on his comedy act. He can next be seen on the upcoming Tracy Oliver project.

Ryan is a comedian out of Concord, NC whose versatile style of comedy has allowed him open for mainstream acts such as Jay Pharoah of SNL, urban acts like Michael Blackson of Next Friday, and eccentric acts like Tom Green of The Tom Green Show. By winning many comedy competitions, starting a successful monthly comedy showcase, and gaining the respect of comedians that have been doing it 20+ years; Ryan proved that the amount of stand-up comedy success that he saw in such a short period of time was not a fluke. Due to his success as a viral internet star, Ryan no longer is an opening act. Though he is known more for his online videos, Ryan isn’t like the other internet comedians. We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

About the Artist:
A versatile actor, writer, host, and standup comic, Godfrey has made a name for himself for the range and depth in his work. With an ongoing successful career in standup comedy, he tours internationally and his hilarious one hour stand-up special, REGULAR BLACK, is currently available on Showtime.
On the acting front, Godfrey played the hilarious recurring role of ‘Plaid Jeff’ in Adult Swim’s NEON JOE, WEREWOLF HUNTER. He has also held great recurring roles in LOUIE for FX, BENDERS for IFC and played the lead in the FX pilot, BRONX WARRANTS. His Feature credits include ZOOLANDER, SOUL PLANE, and the Indie, LEAVING LAS VEGAS, in which he performed alongside Nicolas Cage. Godfrey has also used his creative depth in the development of an animated pilot for FOX, that was based on his comedy act. He can next be seen on the upcoming Tracy Oliver project.
