Legendary Vocalist and Broadway Star Melba Moore to Appear at Petersburg Public Library
PETERSBURG, VA — The Petersburg Public Library is proud to welcome Grammy Award–winning vocalist, Broadway legend, and recording artist Melba Moore for a special public appearance on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
This free community event is part of Ms. Moore’s Virginia book tour celebrating her memoir, This Is It – Marvelous…And Getting Better, now available on Amazon. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Ms. Moore, learn about her extraordinary career, and celebrate her lasting impact on music, theater, and culture.
Melba Moore is a Tony Award winner and one of the most influential performers of her generation. She made history as the first African American woman to replace a white actress in a leading Broadway role in the musical Hair. She later won a Tony Award for her performance in Purlie, becoming the first African American woman to win Best Actress in a Musical.
Her career spans decades of success in music and television, including hit songs such as “This Is It,” “You Stepped Into My Life,” “Love’s Comin’ At Cha,” and the Grammy-nominated “Read My Lips.” In 2016, her rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.
Most recently, Ms. Moore was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mazzoni Center for her contributions to the LGBTQIA community.
