Black History Museum and Cultural Center

The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia was founded in 1981 by Carroll Anderson, Sr. The Museum recently renovated the Leigh Street Armory and moved its headquarters to better serve the community by preserving stories that inspire. We carry out this mission through historic and contemporary exhibitions, docent guided tours, author talks and book signings, topical community conversations, performance art, fun and educational children’s programming, documentary screenings, and special events.
