ODE to the ANOMALOUS

The group exhibition serves as a written note in the margins pinning the present and creating future entry points. Through presented select works and installation, the exhibition navigates the intersections experienced between curator, collector and observer. Works scoping across text, abstract, mixed media painting and textile collage transmute the artists’ redirection away from traditional and normalized processes, materials and stories. These narratives materialize a safe space for dialogue utilizing meaning-making processes, ethnography, cultural archiving, and self-excavation as methods to approach and actualize vulnerability, post-modern thought, holistic growth and revolution. Such content have become revolving touch-points for the curator and artists. The operationalization of transference echoes throughout the works resounding within these mirrors creating a tangible matrix for the externalized experience.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

Sir Guy and Lady Kate will show you how to create your own Shakespearean character through language and movement—no sets, scripts, or previous experience required. All activities are fully adaptable to accommodate various mobility needs and preferences.

Participants will explore playful exercises inspired by the practices of travelling players, learning simple ways to shape language so it sounds more Shakespearean, embody characters drawn from the Bard’s works, and discover how action and voice work together to create compelling scenes. The session will culminate in placing these characters into short scenes, revealing how a play can emerge organically through improvisation.

Designed for participants ages 18 and up, this workshop will be limited to 15 participants to allow for an intimate, collaborative experience.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

You'll carve and print a small rubber block and you'll leave with a handmade stamp of your own creation. The first book discussion we are hosting will focus on Tevye the Dairyman and Motl the Cantor's Son by Sholem Aleichem, translated by Aliza Shevrin. Sholem Aleichem, the pseudonym of Sholem Rabinovitch (1859-1916), was one of the greatest Jewish writers of modern times, a pioneer of literary fiction in Yiddish who transformed the folk materials and experiences of Eastern European Jews into classics of world literature. His most beloved character, Tevye the Dairyman, became the protagonist of stage and film adaptations, including the Broadway musical and film Fiddler on the Roof, securing his place in popular culture worldwide; even before that, though, Sholem Aleichem's stories featuring Tevye were appreciated as brilliant comic distillations of modern Jewish experience.

Copies of the book are available for participants who register. After registering, you will be contacted by library staff to receive your copy of the book. Participants who can provide their own copy of the books are welcome to register as well.

Please note that participation in any Between Two Worlds programs is open to all. People wishing to learn more about Yiddish literature and culture are encouraged to register, regardless of your level of previous knowledge. Through reading high quality translations and participating in facilitated discussions, these stories and histories will be made available to as many people as possible. Participation in other Between Two Worlds programs encouraged, but not required.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

About the Books:

Ruby Young is slowly adjusting to her new life in Boston. A big part of that is her unexpected roommate—the ghost of the woman who lived there before. About the Authors:

She had her first ghost encounter when she was five, but wasn’t involved with an active crime scene until much later, when she accidentally stepped into a chalk outline on a Manhattan sidewalk. In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

Designed for all ages, March Into Spring features interactive learning and hands-on activities to help the community step confidently into the growing season. Attendees can explore winter seed sowing with a practical focus: Hanover Master Gardeners will share what they learned from their own winter sowing in the garden, so home gardeners can apply those findings next year, along with a preview of what they plan to try in future seasons.

Visitors can also stop by Cool Tools to see and compare a variety of gardening tools and get guidance on choosing the right tool for the right job, making spring projects easier and more successful. A hands-on demonstration of berry pruning with guided instruction will offer timely tips for home landscapes, and visitors can pick up a soil testing kit to support healthier planting decisions.

For the kiddos, the Recycle N Grow activity teaches why biodegradable materials matter in the garden and how recycling can support healthier soil and less waste. Children will plant seeds in egg cartons to take home and grow.

A tool sharpening service ($5 per tool) will be offered as a fundraiser to support the Hanover Master Gardeners’ and help expand future programs.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

Newman recounts how, for centuries, Britain has told itself and the world that it is an abolitionist nation, one that, unlike the United States, rejected human bondage and dismantled its Atlantic slave empire without tearing itself apart in violence. It presented itself as an abolitionist nation headed by a just, humane monarch who liberated enslaved Africans and recognized their descendants as free and equal subjects of the British Crown. Ranging from the Tudor era to the reign of Queen Victoria, she shows how successive monarchs invested in, profited from and defended an imperial system built on racial slavery — and how the Crown’s silence continues to shape public memory to this day.

Newman is an associate professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. She specializes in the history of early modern Britain and the British Atlantic, with a focus on slavery and its legacies.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait? weaves together two storylines: the trajectories of Alice Paul and Woodrow Wilson, two apparent opposites. Paul’s procession of suffragists resulted in her being granted a face-to-face meeting with President Wilson, one that would lead to many meetings and much discussion, but little progress for women. With no equality in sight and patience wearing thin, Paul organized the first group to ever picket in front of the White House lawn—night and day, through sweltering summer mornings and frigid fall nights.

From solitary confinement, hunger strikes, and the psychiatric ward to ever more determined activism, Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait? reveals the courageous, near-death journey it took, spearheaded in no small part by Alice Paul’s leadership, to grant women the right to vote in America. “A remarkable tale” (Kirkus Reviews) and a rousing portrait of a little-known feminist heroine, this is an eye-opening exploration of a crucial moment in American history one century before the Women’s March.

A quarterly book discussion focused on recently published or classic works of narrative non-fiction, including general histories and biographies. Reading at least part of work is encouraged. Facilitated discussions may feature supplementary articles, videos or talks from experts.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

Brendan Sagalow has deftly and defiantly owned the stage for over 10 years. His debut full-hour comedy special, Thin Lips, was released this past August on Youtube and continues to receive both critical acclaim by audiences and comics alike. Brendan performed as a “New Face” in the 2022 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. He has also taken part in the Rogue Island Comedy Festival, Skankfest, and the New York Comedy Festival. He has written for MTV's Joking Off, and appeared on ViceTV’s Tumbleweeds with Killer Mike and the popular Barstool Sports series Answer the Internet. Brendan co-hosted Here’s the Scenario podcast with fellow comedians Mike Cannon and Mike Feeney, and now hosts his own show, Sagdaddy Da Pod. When not touring nationally, Brendan can be seen performing at clubs across New York City.

Nick Deez Is that his real last name? Who knows. Homeported in Virginia Beach, VA, Nick grew up an only child which helped him develop his quick wit and warped sense of humor. He’s performed in comedy clubs across the U.S., and is a regular at the Richmond and Virginia Beach Funny Bone clubs. Look for his all crowd work debut album, “Tell Me More” currently streaming on all platforms.

About the Artist:
Steph Tolev caught fire on the “BILL BURR PRESENTS: FRIENDS WHO KILL” Netflix Special, that was taped as a part of the Netflix is a Joke Festival. She was named a COMEDIAN YOU SHOULD AND WILL KNOW by Vulture, which recognized her one of Toronto’s funniest exports. She was featured on Comedy Central’s THE RINGERS stand up series, and season two of UNPROTECTED SETS. Steph will appear in the upcoming feature DRUGSTORE JUNE, as well as OLD DADS starring Bill Burr, Bobby Cannavale, and Bokeem Woodbine. She has appeared in Comedy Central’s CORPORATE, and starred in an episode of the Sarah Silverman-produced PLEASE UNDERSTAND ME. Steph has been well-received at festivals all over the world, she can be seen performing all around LA, including The Comedy Store where she is a paid regular, and headlines clubs across the country.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Untitled Stories by Helene Ruiz is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings by a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Artist Statement

When I was offered this solo exhibition during Women’s History Month at anne’s Visual Art Studio gallery, my first thought was: Which works should I choose? So many to choose from, so many themes that matter to me. After creating hundreds of artworks over the years—and with time reminding me that my body doesn’t always keep up with how young my mind feels (if only I could turn back the hands of time!)—I had to stop and ask myself, What truly defines me as an artist… and as a woman? What matters most?

For me, it’s emotion, compassion, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, justice, human and animal rights, and yes, even the state of “politRics.” Pretty much anything that stirs my heart or spirit can inspire a painting. These are also the same forces that have carried me, challenged me, and shaped me as a woman navigating a world that doesn’t always make space for our voices.

In that sense, this exhibition aligns naturally with Women’s History Month. Women have always rebuilt, reimagined, and persisted—and I see my own journey, struggles, and resilience reflected in that ongoing story. Through it all, my NYC roots stay at the center. Being born and raised in NYC is what has shaped me. It is how I see, act and react, live, think, feel, and create. Those roots run deep with experience, grit, rhythm, and soul. They are also the roots that taught me strength, generosity, and community values. - Helene Ruiz

So, at the heart of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, which celebrates uplifting one another so we can all rise, this exhibition is a mix of a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of New York City, filtered through the lens of a woman shaped by her city, her history, and her belief in justice, equity, and the power of giving back.

Biography
Helene Ruiz is a NYC-born and raised artist whose work reflects the rhythm, resilience, and the raw emotion of life. A storyteller through her art, she channels themes of justice, compassion, and human connection into her art. Her creations often explore social and political realities while celebrating strength, survival, and truth.

In her Bronx NY apartment back in 2008, she founded The Urban Individualists, an international multimedia artists collective devoted to creative freedom and cultural exchange. Wherever her journey takes her, Helene carries the soul of New York City in just about every brushstroke.

She is the author of Black America Series: Richmond, Virginia (Arcadia Publishing), and eight biographical entries for the African American National Biography (AANB). She was also honored to serve as the art department researcher for Steven Spielberg’s motion picture, “Lincoln”.

"From Ulster to Appalachia" is a lively and insightful musical journey across oceans and generations with master fiddler Mike Ferry. Blending performance with storytelling, Mike traces the path of the Scots-Irish from Ulster to the American colonies, exploring how their independent spirit, deep-rooted work ethic, and rich fiddle and song traditions helped shape early American culture. Through spirited tunes, songs and engaging historical insight, he reveals how this resilient community left an enduring mark on the music of Appalachia, which in turn gave rise to old time, bluegrass and country music.

Drawing from his own heritage (three grandparents from Donegal) Mike brings special passion to the distinctive Donegal style of fiddling, demonstrating its driving rhythms and unique bowing techniques. He also explores the musical bridge between Protestant Scots-Irish settlers and the Catholic Irish who arrived in great numbers during the mid-1800s, showing how their shared traditions intertwined to influence early American music. A seasoned performer who has toured nationwide, Mike’s original compositions have been featured on television programs including Dawson's Creek and Scrubs. Presented in the warm, welcoming listening room of Richmond Folk Music, this performance promises an evening of vibrant music, history, and community.

Phil Wright is an internationally acclaimed choreographer, creative director, actor, and dance educator known for his explosive energy, faith-driven message, and commitment to bringing families together through dance. A Miami native, Wright began teaching at just 16 years old and quickly built a global movement rooted in positivity, empowerment, and high-impact hip-hop choreography.
Over the years, Wright has worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Will Smith, Kevin Hart, G-Eazy, MC Hammer, and Lil Nas X. His choreography spans music videos, live performances, tours, award shows, and major televised events, earning him a reputation for blending sharp musicality with heartfelt storytelling.
Wright created and starred in Disney's Fam Jam on Disney Channel, a family dance competition series that celebrated unity, joy, and high-energy routines performed by parents and kids together. Wright also brought his viral movement, “The Parent Jam,” to a national stage on America's Got Talent, where he further amplified his mission of strengthening families through dance.
Expanding into acting, Wright portrayed the title character Harold in the Disney Channel Original Movie Under Wraps, a family adventure about a lovable mummy who awakens on Halloween. Taking on the lead role showcased his versatility as an entertainer and marked a major milestone in his on-screen career.
Through every platform — stage, screen, and studio — Phil Wright continues to inspire the next generation by proving that dance is more than movement; it’s connection, purpose, and power.

"Her Prospects of Election: Virginia Women in Politics" is a lobby display commemorating the inauguration of Virginia's first woman governor in 2026. Women in Virginia have always found ways to participate in politics, but it was not until ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that they gained the right to be elected to public office in the Commonwealth. Items from the Library's collections highlight women who have served Virginia in state and national office.

Free parking is available underneath the Library of Virginia at 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia.

We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Immersive environments, historical objects, powerful images, and multimedia stations reveal immigrant experiences of leaving home, settling in an unfamiliar place, and becoming Virginians. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.

The exhibition is the fruition of a five-year collaborative endeavor. Extensive interviews and story-gathering with many of the people featured in the exhibition and their descendants ensured authenticity at every stage of the planning process, while multiple advisory councils composed of community members and subject matter experts provided context and guidance.

We The People is a signature component of the VMHC's multi-year 250th Initiative.
