Join us for our annual lecture series. September will feature Mark Summers, Public Historian, Historic Jamestowne.

Join Mark Summers, Public Historian at Jamestown Rediscovery for a lecture about the arrival of the first Africans to Virginia in 1619. That August, nearly three weeks after the first representative government at Jamestown was held Africans arrived in Virginia on board the White Lion and the Treasurer. These two ships had taken the Africans off of a Spanish slaver vessel the San Juan Batista. These Africans were originally stolen from what is now Angola and transported to the New World: were they to be sold as slaves? Were they then enslaved in Virginia even as no laws had officially allowed the practice? Mr. Summers will discuss how slavery evolved in Virginia and how it was resisted from day one. He will discuss recent archaeological excavations and the search for the "meaning of Angela" in the archaeology, the written records, and in today's headlines.

Tickets are now available through Eventbrite.
