Oruwari's Offering
This August, Nigerian visual artist Data Oruwari brings her visionary body of work Echoes of the Nile to life in Richmond. Presented by OSENGWA, a multidisciplinary creative enterprise committed to African art and culture, the exhibition reimagines ancient spiritual wisdom for contemporary times; inviting viewers into a deeply immersive and introspective experience.

Echoes of the Nile explores the sacred laws of Ma’at: the ancient Egyptian principles of truth, balance, harmony, and cosmic order. Through 44 intricate ink-based artworks, Data Oruwari bridges ancestral knowledge and contemporary storytelling using pointillism, fine linework, and luminous gold detailing.

The exhibition is curated by Seju Alero Mike, Artistic Director of OSENGWA and Ra-Twoine Fields, co-owner of Southside Contemporary Art Gallery.

The Exhibition Experience
The exhibition features not only visual works but a multisensory experience that
includes sacred soundscapes, storytelling components, and an immersive
participatory ritual known as The Weighing of the Heart Ceremony. Inspired by the ancient Egyptian judgment scene, this ceremony invites attendees to reflect on personal truth, release emotional weight, and affirm virtues aligned with Ma’at. It is one of many touchpoints designed to activate the exhibition as a spiritual experience rather than a passive viewing.
