Join the Virginia Plein Air Painters for the opening reception of a group show, “In Open Air”. VPAP is a group that gets together once a month from March to October paint en plein air (literally, “in open air”).
Exhibiting artists include: Linda Hollett-Bazouzi, Mike Haubenstock, André Lucero, Cathy Tyler, Sally Brydon Booth, Maria K. Motz, Dale Sawan, Harvey Hinson, Nancy Wallace, Mary Castle, Gail Litton, Eleanor Cox, Kim Hall, Coakley Brown, Jeannie Wermuth, and Jennifer Young.
The term became popular in describing the work of the French Impressionists as they captured light by painting outside, where they could directly observe the play of light and shadow, and their fleeting movement across objects and landscape. Artists had always gone outside for sketching and doing studies, but the Impressionists were the first to embrace plein air painting as an end in itself.
