Three powerhouse vocalists of today revive the liberated spirits and pioneering vocalizations of four divas of the blues from the 1920s: Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Ethel Waters. As the singers delve deep into the music of the Empress, Queen, and Mother of the Blues as well as that of stage and screen icon Waters, pianist Mark Shane leads a seven-piece band. Russel, Thomas, Wade pay homage to—and push forward—one of America’s essential musical contributions, tackling the follies of love and stomping the blues away.
Join us at 6:30 pm for a pre-concert discussion with the artists led by Michael J. Gourrier, jazz director at WRIR 97.3 FM.
