For four centuries, primarily in the U.K., parades, fireworks, and bonfires have celebrated the failure of an attempt to kill King James I and England’s leaders on November 5, 1605. Often known as Guy Fawkes Night and the Gunpowder Treason Plot, an anonymous letter would expose Fawkes and his co-conspirators in a plot to blow up the House of Lords with 36 barrels of gunpowder.

So, what does this all mean for Virginia? Well, if Fawkes would have succeeded, prospective investors in the Virginia Company would have perished and Jamestown and Henrico itself might have never existed. Don’t miss this fascinating lecture and find out the true story of Guy Fawkes and how his failure impacted Virginia and how his image and legacy would later influence popular culture as the masked face of social agitation and even the pronoun of the phrase “You Guys.”

  • What: “How a Terrorist Failure in 1605 Enabled Jamestown and Henrico,” presented by Tony Pelling, Retired Under Secretary, U.K. Department of the Environment
  • When: Wednesday, October 27, 12 - 12:45 pm
