Lunch Break Science: Suicide Prevention on College Campuses

Wednesday, April 14 at 12:00pm to 12:45pm

Suicide is a leading cause of death among college and university students across the United States. Typically, in the past, strategies for reducing risk of suicide emphasized on treating individuals that showed some signs of distress. However, a new preventative approach that focuses on the community as whole is helping to broaden support, reduce suicide and improve all aspects of campus life.

When most people hear the term “public health”, they think of vaccines and disease prevention. But, what does a public health approach mean in reference to suicide prevention? And what does that practically look like on a college campus?

Find out the facts and benefits as Dr. Danette Gibbs, Director of Research and Strategic Planning at the Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia, discusses trends in suicidal behaviors among college students and what actions we can all take to prevent suicide and promote well-being in our own communities.

  • What: “Taking a Public Health Approach to Campus Suicide Prevention," presented by Dr. Danette Gibbs, Director of Research and Strategic Planning at the Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia
  • When: Wednesday, April 14, 12 - 12:45 pm
