On view in the Main Gallery will be Identifying with Artifice: the Specter of Capitalism , paintings by Morgan Craig. Nationally and Internationally exhibited, Morgan Craig’s work is not merely a method of documentation, but a sociopolitical/socioeconomic commentary on the effects of hubris, avarice, free trade, outsourcing, deregulation, deterritorialization, neoliberalism, obsolescence, and international-finance-capital upon communities throughout the world. Craig states, “I believe that architectural structures acting as both repositories and as vehicles for memory profoundly influence culture and identity by providing a tangible framework through which facets of a society can be expressed. Consequently, I have been inspired to build a body of work dealing with how identity is influenced by the types of architectural edifices present in a given landscape.”

Naomi Swyers will exhibit Richmond Through a Needle's Eye, portraits in fiber, in the Helena Davis Gallery. This series revolves around glass negatives from an esteemed photography business in the early 19th century, Homeier and Clark, based in Richmond, Virginia. The photographer John Clark left 160 glass negatives in the basement of the artist’s mother-in-law’s brick row house on Floyd Avenue. These glass negatives form the basis of this series which Swyer’s enhances intuitively as she plays with a large variety of textiles and fibers. Swyer’s says, “I use embroidery, free motion drawing, and any other media I find interesting to celebrate lives once lived.”

The Frable and smallspace Galleries will feature Signal:Noise , collaborative composite works by Robin L. Ryder, William Brian Porter, and L. Daniel Mouer. This exhibition includes works in fiber arts, mixed media, filmmaking, kinetic digital imaging, and music. These works are the artists individual and combined attempts to transcend the gap between noise and signal, message and static, creation and deconstruction, order and entropy. Many of these works include elements of fragmentation, fraying, fracturing, obscuring and revealing. Most of these pieces involve some form of compositing--in the sense meant by traditional graphic arts--of layering, sandwiching and blending diverse imagery and media. These are true collaborations in which one artist subjects his work to other artists’ whims and wishes. They reveal both commonality and opposition of intentions. Unity comes from the three artists’ embrace of the meditative power of concentrating creative work on process rather than product.

The Suzanne Foley Gallery will show Elements - the parts and the whole, works in all media by art space Artist Members.
