What is an artist residency? What is the value of a residency? Which one is good for me? What am I expected to do? What is the ideal length of a residency? Can you bring your family? Award-winning artist Paul Rucker will help you navigate the world of artist residencies, drawing upon his experience as an artist in residence in more than 15 locations, nationally and internationally. Residencies can range from rural to urban settings—from being the lone artist to one of many; Some residencies even restrict all cell-phone use. Rucker’s wide range of experiences, from the plains of Wyoming to a mountainous villa in Italy, will help you find the right residency for you.

About the Professional Development for Artists workshops:
Many artists have not had the opportunity to gain the knowledge and strategies needed to move their careers forward. These free workshops offer that to all artists and creatives in all fields, across VCU and beyond. The series, this fall, provides instruction and guidance on how to secure grants and fellowships, how to get and use artist residencies, and how to promote yourself as an artist. It will continue in the New Year with workshops on how to collaborate with art institutions, how to get public art commissions, how to engage with communities, and concludes with how to create a strategic plan for your career. The seminars are designed and led by award-winning artist Paul Rucker, who draws upon his real-life experience securing funding, fellowships, residencies and other opportunities over the course of his career. Over the course of the series, Rucker will occasionally be joined by guest artists, from various fields, who will bring their perspectives.

All workshops are free and open to the public!
