The secret to writing a grant is not secret at all. This seminar will demystify the process by providing emerging, mid-career, and established artists with the skills, knowledge, and language needed to write a successful grant. Learn the difference between a grant, fellowship, or commission. And how to find the right grant for you. You’ll learn how to interpret grant guidelines, write compelling narratives, create budgets and provide work samples and other documentation to support your proposal.

About the Professional Development for Artists workshops:
Many artists have not had the opportunity to gain the knowledge and strategies needed to move their careers forward. These free workshops offer that to all artists and creatives in all fields, across VCU and beyond. The series, this fall, provides instruction and guidance on how to secure grants and fellowships, how to get and use artist residencies, and how to promote yourself as an artist. It will continue in the New Year with workshops on how to collaborate with art institutions, how to get public art commissions, how to engage with communities, and concludes with how to create a strategic plan for your career. The seminars are designed and led by award-winning artist Paul Rucker, who draws upon his real-life experience securing funding, fellowships, residencies and other opportunities over the course of his career. Over the course of the series, Rucker will occasionally be joined by guest artists, from various fields, who will bring their perspectives.

All workshops are free and open to the public!
