Rare and Exotic Woods Jewelry Workshop with Rick Smucker, PhD, MT-BC

Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 11:00am to 3:00pm

Rich has years of experience and knowledge doing the thing he loves; creating stunning jewelry from Nature’s rare and unique varieties of wood: mistletoe, oak burl, wine vine, or wine infused oak. Rich will assist you in selecting the wood type and the shape that speaks to your heart from the vast variety of raw, precut earring or pendant pieces for transforming into your own personal work of art. Providing all needed supplies, he will teach you the secrets he has gained through years of working with these rich cuts of wood for discovering and illuminating the innate beauty of your piece. You can decide whether you wish to create a single or composite work from the pieces you have selected. You will leave this workshop with a stunning finished work of art, made by you, and you will take with you the secret alchemy for revealing beauty in surprising places.

You will:

  • Select materials from a vast array of options, precut from mistletoe/oak burl, wine vine, or wine infused oak
  • Decide how you wish to arrange your unique selections and how they might look on you (single or composite combining two shapes)
  • Do the final shaping of selections
  • Perform the intermediate sanding of selections
  • Perform the intermediate final sanding of selections
  • Follow the secret steps for polishing your selection to bring out its magical qualities (polishing papers and felt wheel buffing)
  • Make your choice and apply either French wires (titanium), or marquis wires for earring selections
  • Select a neck cord for necklace pendants
  • Take home a care package (special polishing fabric for you: one micrometer particle size polishing finish for special care of your beautiful work of art)
  • Revel in the joy of having discovered and revealed the beauty found in surprising places
