Richard Roth: “Psycho-Billy Cadillac”

Thursday, May 28

More dates through May 31, 2020

Reynolds Gallery is pleased to present Psycho-Billy Cadillac from artist, designer, and author Richard Roth. This virtual exhibition brings together a selection of Roth’s box paintings – a format he uses as a means of exploring the relationship between two-dimensional surfaces and three-dimensional forms. Upon the surfaces of these boxes, Roth invents seemingly infinite variations of visual abstraction which force viewers to question the true dimensionality of each painting. The artist cites Navajo blankets, African textiles, contemporary fashion, architecture, furniture design, decorative objects, basketry, and custom cars among the many subjects that have inspired his work, which is here rendered in a multitude of bold complimentary and contrasting hues. Richard Roth is a Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he taught in the Painting and Printmaking department from 1999 to 2015, serving as department chair for eight years.
