Richmond Tattoo & Arts Academy

For the second consecutive year, the Richmond Tattoo, Art & Music Festival will host the Richmond Tattoo & Arts Academy. For two days, internationally recognized tattoo artists, illustrators, and painters will present seminars and share their knowledge, experience, technique, and stories on becoming successful in the art world. 

Presenters for Thursday, Sept. 12th:

*Only tattoo artists are permitted to purchase tickets for this day.*

  • Ryan Ashley Malarkey: Tattoo Design & Process; known for her detailed jewelry tattoos, the artist will explain her design process on making intricate works of art. Malarkey is an Ink Master winner and co-host of Ink Master Angels.

  • Frank La Natra: Digital Painting & Character Design; the presentation will break down the initial sketch phase of character creation and follow through with how to finish a digital rendering. La Natra is the owner of Into the Woods Tattoo Galleries and an established “new school” tattooer.

  • Sarah Miller: The Biology of Tattooing; this seminar will cover how to optimize the healing process of a tattoo and fully understanding the dermis as a living canvas. Miller is a world recognized color realism artist and runner-up on Season 2 of Ink Master.

  • Nick Baxter: The Holistic Approach; aiming to present new approaches to tattooing, the artist will present a methodical strategy for approaching tattoos of any genre with big-picture context in mind. Baxter is known for his painterly style of biomechanical and illustrative tattooing.

The goal of the Academy is to create an environment where artists of all different stages in their careers can learn and be inspired by some of the best artists in today’s art scene. 

Presenters for Monday, Sept. 16th:

  • Esao Andrews: Artistic Influences & Ideation; best known for his surreal album artwork for the band Circa Survive, Andrews will reflect on his artistic journey and talk about his influences and approach to brainstorming ideas.

  • OG Abel: Lettering & Vectorizing; the presentation will explore lettering in depth and converting a sketch to vector art. The artist owns a merchandise brand and has also worked with high-profile companies like Coca-Cola, Sony, and more.

  • Jon Wayhsak: Drawing & Painting Process; this seminar will cover Wayshak’s thought process behind drawing and painting using pen and ink as the medium. Wayshak is an illustrator with an energetic style of work that aims to tell stories through texture and design.

Sterling Hundley: 10 Things That Change Your Art; based on years of experience as an illustrator and professor, Hundley has created ten ideas that can change how artists approach making work. He has received continuous recognition for his work and has a wide range of clients, such as Rolling Stone, Marvel, and more.
