The Art of Black Sound by Jonae Archer

The Art of Black Sound is a visual expression of Black music and its influence on everyday life, culture, creativity, and identity. Through vivid artwork inspired by 90s R&B, 90s Hip-Hop, and the sounds of the early 2000s, Jonae explores how music became a personal soundtrack and artistic inspiration.

The exhibit will feature urban artistic expressions inspired by influential artists such as Pharrell, Tyler, The Creator, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar, along with two freestyle replica interpretations of works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, the legendary artist whose work and cultural impact inspired generations of artists and musicians. Jay-Z has openly referenced Basquiat in his music, most notably on Magna Carta Holy Grail, where he raps, “I’m the new Jean-Michel.”

This exhibit celebrates the connection between sound, storytelling, and visual art while honoring the lasting impact of Black music and culture. Join us as we celebrate local artistry, creativity, and community while helping keep the arts alive in Petersburg.
