In the Fall of 1993, King & Queen County approached the Pamunkey Regional Library to have Pamunkey run a Library in the county. There was at that time a volunteer Library in Walkerton. After some negotiations, the County and Pamunkey settled on opening a Library in the old Lawson-Marriott School. This school, which had been closed for several years, is located in St. Stephens Church, in the western end of the county. There was much work that needed to be done to fix up the three rooms that the King & Queen Branch needed in the school building. Also a collection of books and audio-visual materials needed to be put together. Pamunkey received a grant from the Library of Virginia, which helped pay for some of the materials that are in this branch library. The King & Queen Library opened to the public in March 1994. On Monday, January 14, 2002 we opened our new branch facility, which was generously donated by the County of Henrico, on the grounds of the Marriott School. The library remained in this location until 2011, when, due to storm damage, it was temporarily closed until the renovations at the Marriott School were completed. The library reopened on Monday, February 13, 2012 in the Marriott School with an expanded computer lab, large community meeting room, lots of books, CDs, & DVDs, and much more. The library has been a great asset to the community, especially to local school-aged children, and we look forward to serving the citizens of King & Queen County for many years to come.
