Daniel Jones

I don’t really have a photographic philosophy. I don’t believe that photography tells the “truth”. I do believe a camera and lens are a great way to explore the world. Photography allows me to interpret it as I see fit. Sometimes I decide on an interpretation while making a photograph. Sometimes I  decide on an interpretation after viewing a photograph many times. Black and white is my preference, but consistency in process doesn’t come easily. My style and interpretations change often, just like my mood, the weather, and the world.

Saul Leiter, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Man Ray, Helmut Newton, Olga Karlovač, Jan Saudek, Josef Koudelka, André Kertész, and Daido Moriyama are some of my inspirations. I enjoy the philosophical musings of John Berger and John Ruskin and embrace the concept of wabi sabi in art and life. The world is imperfect. Why should photography be?

Originally from Hopewell, Virginia, Daniel Jones is a photographer now based in Petersburg, Virginia. He is also a program manager for CultureWorks, Inc in Richmond, Virginia, a non-profit that works to support artists and arts and culture organizations every day. He has three children, three cats, and supports Liverpool Football Club.
